Journey from a Small Desk to a Cubical Workspace
In professional life, individuals often advance through
various roles, ascending from junior positions to more senior titles within
their organization. Each promotion may come with a change in workspace moving
from a small desk to a cubical or cabin. This raises the question: do we attach
ourselves more to the place we work, the designation we hold or the work that
brings recognition?
Recognition can manifest in many forms, through one’s
personality and confidence, family background or material benefits provided by
the organization.
While working in a professional environment, one may face
challenges such as colleagues not appreciating perks or benefits, which can
lead to envy or negative behaviours. Rumours may spread with the intent to
distract or undermine work focus, often causing unnecessary conflict. However,
this environment also offers opportunities for positive friendships to flourish.
In mixed-gender workplaces, perceptions often skew men are
sometimes viewed as potential harassers, while instances of women mistreating
other women should not be overlooked. This raises an important question: does a
chair or desk hold more value than exhibiting basic human kindness towards any
gender?
A notable aspect of my previous work environment was the
flexibility to work from anywhere. In such a setting, the physical desk or
cubicle became less significant compared to the satisfaction derived from the
work delivered and the appreciation received. This perspective fuelled my
progression from an assistant teacher to a Chief Manager of a teaching
institute.
Working with an organization over an extended period fosters
a sense of belonging, much like that of a family, since we spend most of our
time outside the home at the workplace. The longer you stay with a company, the
stronger this bond becomes. However, it’s essential to maintain professional
boundaries with colleagues, excessive friendliness towards everyone can
sometimes lead to negative consequences associated with being overly nice.
When promoted, it’s important to celebrate your achievement
and follow these tips:
- Stay
calm and positive to prevent negative impacts, but stand firm to uphold
your dignity.
- Be
friendly, not overly familiar or rude and clearly set boundaries.
- Prioritize
learning new skills and knowledge over material possessions.
- Avoid
workplace politics to preserve your integrity.
- Innovate,
upgrade your skills and continually add value to your role.
These practices have helped me in my journey and I hope they
will assist you as well.
Closing Note
The key to a fulfilling professional journey lies in
balancing your ambitions with integrity, nurturing positive relationships with
colleagues and consistently striving for growth. Remember, recognition and
success are as much about your character and attitude as they are about your
position or workspace. Embrace every opportunity to learn and evolve and always
uphold the values that define your professionalism.
